Since the last time we conducted our 'state-of-the-industry' benchmark survey 'Balancing Act' in 2018, we've been through Covid-19 and now the cost-of-living crisis. The way we work has changed forever. Families have been hit hard from every direction, from schools closure to choosing between keeping the lights on or having a hot meal.
Still far from pre-Covid levels of attendance, in theatres and concert halls, the performing arts sector has rallied together and adapted the best we can. Over the past five years, PiPA membership has more than tripled. People are listening and things are changing.
But we also know that people are still disadvantaged and missing out on work because they are parents and/or carers and are being forced to re-evaluate their life choices. Tragically, many are giving up established careers in the performing arts. And so we must continue to strive for change. There is so much more we can do, but we need your help to do it.
If the future of art and equality matters to you and you want to level the playing field, if you value work-life balance and want to see a performing arts sector that genuinely values its workforce, please take 10 minutes to do our survey.
Tell us what you need and we’ll work tirelessly to get it.

We need data from everyone - all genders, all ages and whether you have caring responsibilities or not. This is your chance to help make the performing arts equitable for all.
Please share the survey with everyone you know in the industry, even if they're not parents and carers. It's critical that we gather at least 1000 responses, so share wherever you can! You can start by resharing our posts across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using the hashtag #ShareYourBalancingAct.
The survey will take a few minutes of your time but make an immense difference in reshaping our industry. Together, let's ensure that in the performing arts, everyone's part is equally valued and the show truly goes on!
