Regardless of whether you have school-age children or not, August holidays often feel like a moment to reset. Perhaps it is so engrained from childhood - the feeling that come September you will have a new pencil case, fresh uniform, an extra inch or so in height, and a world of new possibilities.
'Resetting' is certainly a buzzword at the moment, as the world begins to right itself after Covid-19. #BuildBackBetter is a nice hashtag to be trending, but what does this actually mean? What will the tangible benefits be for the performing arts workforce? These are the questions that PiPA and our partners have been unpicking over the past 16 months.
PiPA's Covid Report revealed that the pandemic has exacerbated existing inequalities in the performing arts. Significantly, it identified that parents and carers that belong to under-represented groups in the performing arts - (D/deaf and/or disabled, people from ethnically diverse backgrounds and those from lower socio-economic backgrounds) - have been particularly disadvantaged.
In response, PiPA set to work on a number of projects which we are now excited to share with you all. These include a new year-long project in Yorkshire supporting freelancers with intersectional caring responsibilities, a brand new Remote Working Toolkit and an ambitious new research project in the Dance sector.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Remote Working Survey in May 2021. This research identified a significant appetite among both managers and the workforce for more flexible working practices. As we look to the future, there are many factors to be considered, and there is no singular 'right' approach to working in a post-Covid landscape. There is an understandable tension between wanting things to 'get back to normal' and 'doing things differently.'
To assist leaders and managers as they explore new approaches to working for their workforce, commissioned by UK Theatre and Society of London Theatre (SOLT) and based on market-tested strategies as part of the PiPA Charter Programme, we have created a Remote Working Toolkit, full of resources, comprehensive strategies and practical tools to help performing arts managers implement remote, flexible and mixed models of working.
If you have any questions about the toolkit, PiPA and UK Theatre/ SOLT will be hosting a webinar on 30 September 2021, 10am-12pm. This will be an opportunity for a deeper dive and to explore case studies provided by industry leaders including Royal Shakespeare Company, Mercury Theatre Colchester and Costume in Theatre, Entertainment and Arts.

Open to dancers, choreographers, dance practitioners, Artistic/Rehearsal Directors and dance teachers with caring responsibilities, this focus group will explore the specific barriers to career progression faced by parent and carer dance professionals.
