About the Project

PiPA is embarking on an action-research project supporting a cohort of 15 Yorkshire-based performing arts practitioners that face additional barriers to employment to engage in a programme of professional development to support and strengthen their position within the industry.

This unique opportunity is open to Yorkshire-based parents or carers in the performing arts who are freelancers, on short contracts or not currently in work, who are further disadvantaged due to their ethnicity, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, other protected characteristic or consider themselves to be from a working class background.

Parents and Carers are a sub-sector of every protected characteristic, and this programme, funded by Arts Council England, has been developed to address the challenges they face.

PiPA’s new action-research pilot Project: ‘Return and Retain’ aims to kickstart this process by supporting a cohort of 15 freelancers through a programme of professional development to support and strengthen their position within the industry.

This programme will last 6 months, running from January 2022 to August 2022. There will be a minimum of 3 days commitment for full cohort meetings. All other professional development opportunities will be arranged at a time that is suitable for each practitioner.

Alongside supporting the professional development of the cohort, this project also aims to create industry resources that will increase the social capital of marginalised parent and carer freelancers, and enable organisations to better understand and support the needs of these individuals.
